Anyone who loves golf knows that one of the worst parts of trying to improve your game is the money you have to invest. It’s expensive to get better at golf. However, as a professional golfer, I can tell you that many high-ticket golf products are not helping you. Here are 7 investments into your golf game that could actually save you a few strokes.
Alignment Sticks
The alignment sticks are underrated. Golfers don’t know how to use them properly but it’s really not all that difficult. With an alignment stick (or two) you can work on things like swing path, alignment, setup consistency and more.
The key here is to find a few drills you can do with the sticks and take them with you every time you head to the driving range. Most of the good ones only cost $20 or $30.
Strokes Gained App
I’ve always kept a close eye on stats. My putting numbers tend to keep me up at night, but until I invested in a strokes gained app, I didn’t realize how much information the basic stats leave out.
With strokes gained app, you can track your game performance, identify specific areas that need improvement, and stop wasting time on the range. There are options for both free or premium apps under $50 where you can keep track of your strokes gained.
If you don’t know much about strokes gained yet; I suggest you take a look at some more information on it.
The most basic way to describe it is that instead of telling you that you make two putts per green, a strokes gained app will tell you that from 0-5 feet, you are putting like a 15 handicap, but from 5-10 feet, you are putting like a 30 handicap.
It’s very useful information!
Golf GPS App
If you are still pacing off your yardages, it’s probably time to stop. I’m sure you can find a cheap rangefinder for under $50, but you can also use a golf GPS unit on your phone to help you narrow down the distance to the green, a hazard, or the corner of a dogleg.
Don’t be worried about GPS units that lack an exact number for the pin. Chances are, as long as you hit a shot to the center of the green, you’ll be in a great position to go lower than usual.
Golf Ball Alignment Tool
A golf ball alignment tool is typically used for putting. These only cost about $10 or $15 and come with the marker.
However, many golfers also struggle with alignment off the tee, and the golf ball alignment tool can help you line up your shots on the tee box.
If you don’t get the ball lined up correctly, you may as well not even take the club back.
Putting Mirror
A putting mirror helps align your eyes and shoulders. You can use it at home or on the course when you practice. For a relatively inexpensive training aid, it has a big impact. You’ll have a more consistent putting stroke and an easier time staying on the proper line.
Golf Impact Tape
Golf impact tape shows you where the ball strikes the clubface. If you are always hitting it on the toe or the heel, your setup or even your current golf club’s lie angle could be impacting this. When you go to the range, put the tape on and challenge yourself to hit the ball closer to the club’s center. You’ll see more distance and better consistency.
The most important thing you’ll gain from using impact tape is clubface awareness, which most amateur golfers lack.
Resistance Bands
Finally, consider investing in resistance bands if you want to gain some serious strength and flexibility. You can use these to target golf specific muscles and improve your power and your range of motion.
Golf fitness programs are a big deal right now, and some cost more than $200. However, you can do a lot with a basic set of resistance bands that will save you at least a few strokes.
Final Thoughts
Now, you have some great ideas for investing just a little money in your game and seeing a big change. Golfers waste a lot of money on golf products and gear they don’t need. Control what products you spend money on to play the better golf courses!
